Nicolò Rovella is set to become the next Italian teenage star to play for Juventus.

The Genoa man has impressed in the few games that he has played for them, and Juventus is looking to secure his future.

The Bianconeri are set to sign the 19-year-old and allow him to remain with Genoa until the end of next season.

The midfielder has now explained the rationale behind the decision which he seems to be happy about.

He said that his career development needs him to be at a club where he will be playing matches regularly so that he can develop himself further.

Rovella then says that it will only happen at Genoa now and he will also be given the chance to make a mistake as he continues to grow as a footballer.

This is why his immediate future is with them.

“My future is at Genoa, because I still need to improve, and it takes time,” the midfielder told SportWeek as quoted by Football Italia.

“I want to play on a regular basis with Genoa and complete a campaign where I am also given the chance to make mistakes. I can only correct my mistakes by playing.”

Rovella has already played 9 league games and 1 Coppa Italia match for them this season, Juventus expects him to play more games for them when he signs and rejoins Genoa on loan.

Kim Howie, left, and Nancy Werteen say human resource priorities are changing to focus on employee outlook and wellness. (Submitted photo)

Recent research tells us that happy, less stressed employees are good for a business’s bottom line. Happier workers are not just more productive, studies show, but also cost less.

It seems that the cut throat, greed-is-good business mantra of the ’80’s has become a thing of the past. It’s time to make way for a kinder and more effective corporate culture. With that in mind, Nancy Werteen and business partner and friend Kim Howie, try to help businesses improve employee happiness by managing employee stress.

Werteen, a long-time anchor and reporter for Allentown’s (Pennsylvania) WFMZ-TV, is a familiar face in the Lehigh Valley. Howie is a Lehigh Valley-based certified health coach and author. As the “Wisdom Coalition,” the duo offer Mindset Management workshops; one-hour interactive virtual presentations filled with tools and tips to bring more positivity to the workplace.

When the American Psychological Review, a scientific journal, is stating that high-stress workplaces have 50% more health care expenditures, and a study by Oxford University concludes that happier employees perform at a higher level, driving more sales, the evidence for increasing workforce happiness is strong.

“What we recognize is that mindset is at the foundation of everything in life,” Werteen said, “And COVID makes things all the more challenging. Employees are struggling to find the positives in life.”

Human resources priorities are changing, she said, adding that corporations such as Center Valley’s Olympus, Allentown’s PPL and Easton’s Crayola are using their workshops. “The wave of the future is employee wellness.”

Werteen and Howie base their workshops on the science of positive psychology — Howie earned a masters degree in the subject from the University of Missouri. Positive psychology focuses on both individual and societal wellness.

One of the ways Mindset Management uses positive psychology is by teaching self-compassion to help manage stress.

“We give the workshop attendees exercises to help make self-compassion more habitual,” Howie said. “We work around core negative beliefs. These are pretty universal, like ‘I’m not enough. I don’t do enough.’ Talk to yourself as you would a dear friend.”

A workshop exercise might include writing a letter to yourself, Howie explained.

Different workplaces have different sources of stress, the pair said, so they tailor each workshop to the client. For example, when designing a workshop for Allentown’s Stephens Funeral Home, the focus was on finding joy in grief.

Whether at a funeral home, hospital or manufacturing company, it is important for employees to recognize that some sources of stress are within their control, and others are not, Howie said.

“We are all feeling squeezed…It’s helpful to reduce the sources of stress that you can,” she said. “Recognize those things that steal your joy.”

Another exercise use is visualization. “Visualize yourself utilizing all your strengths,” Howie said. “Take the time.”

“Part of stress management is taking a pause,” Werteen added. “Taking the time to be your best self.”

In fact, Werteen and Howie recently authored a book entitled, “The Power of a Pause,” that promotes how looking inward can help bring more joy and peace to our lives. While taking a pause or a break on our own to regroup and recharge is always helpful, sometimes pauses just happen to us, Werteen said. “Accidental pauses” are forced upon us at times through things like deaths, accidents or even a pandemic, she said.

It’s important to find the common humanity in cases like this, they say. “We are all in this together,” Werteen said. “We are all in the same storm, in different boats.”

The two like to use the acronym CALM to explain what to do when stress is getting the better of you.

C – Cease, stop and take a breath.

A – Awareness, recognize that you have been triggered.

L – Label it, put a name to what is really bothering you, look for what’s under the anger.

M – Manage it. Meditate, write a letter, take an exercise break.

For some, managing stress might include mediation, which is very effective for Howie. But for Werteen, being active helps best. She finds a tennis match is able to reset and calm her better than time spent meditating. It’s important to find what works best for you, the two said.

For employers, it’s also key that they be aware and recognize what their employees are going through, the pair said. Employers can then offer opportunities for employee and employer to be actively engaged in helping the work culture change for the better.

“People need to feel seen and heard and valued,” Howee said. “Recognize that in your employees.”

When management takes the time to encourage positivity in the workplace, she said, there will be a ripple effect. “Employees will follow,” she said.

“Once you start living the lessons (of positivity and mindfulness), we can see the impact on our families, our children, on all the people we associate with…,” she said. “It feels so good to see that you are having a positive impact on the world.”

Werteen and Howie are working on offering Mindset Management workshops outside of the business arena too, where members of the public can organize a group of friends to take a virtual class in positivity and mindfulness together.

Such gatherings are important in times like these when people are physically distanced from each other, Werteen said.
